Study Permits
Most foreign students will require a Study Permit to study in Canada, with the following exceptions:
- The course or program is short-term, with a duration of six months or less;
- The foreign student is a family member or staff member of a foreign representative to Canada accredited by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada;
- The foreign student is a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act.
Student Permit Application Process
A Study Permit is a document issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada that allows a foreign student to study in Canada for a limited time.
In order for you to apply for a Study Permit, you must have been accepted at a recognized school, university or college in Canada. You must submit your application to the Visa Office that is responsible for the country or region where you live.
Applicants who wish to study in the Province of Quebec will also require a Certificate of Acceptance or CAQ. You must receive the Certificate of Acceptance before applying for a Study Permit.
Study Permits are generally valid for the duration of the intended course or program. However, foreign students studying in the Province of Quebec must renew their status each year.
